Home Learning
Rationale & Principles
At Oasis Academy Oldham we believe that a student’s learning should be in partnership between home and school, and home learning is viewed as a valuable part of a student’s learning journey. It is important that students have frequent and extended opportunities to consolidate their learning and develop as independent learners outside of school. Our aim is for home learning to be structured, purposeful and coherent for all concerned. Home learning at OAO is designed to broaden, consolidate, extend, or enhance the learning experience. Research shows that home learning has a positive impact on supporting student progress, self-regulation, and independence as well as supporting the retention and retrieval of key knowledge, concepts, and skills. Home learning requires lifelong learning skills such as organisation, time management, resilience and encourages students to develop their confidence and self-discipline to work independently, all of which we promote at OAO to help our students to develop as well-rounded individuals.
How much and how often is Home Learning set?
It is an expectation that the time devoted to home learning increases as a student progresses through the Academy. Students in Years 7-9 will receive one piece of homework weekly from core and EBACC subjects, in line with the curriculum. In Years 10 and 11, the volume of homework set may increase to two pieces per week from core subjects and 1-2 pieces per week from each of their option subjects. Homework will be adapted where necessary to meet individual needs. Based on current good practice and previous guidance, we endeavour to follow this guidance on the amount of time that we would encourage our students to spend on their homework/self-directed study.
These guidelines are listed below:
Year 7 to 9: Up to 30 minutes per subject
Year 10 & 11: Up to 60 minutes per subject
Rewards and non-completion of Home Learning.
At Oasis Academy Oldham, we believe that students should be rewarded for effort and application of their learning at home. That means we will praise continued good effort and reward pupils who consistently apply themselves successfully to the homework set. In addition, we will recognise outstanding responses to tasks but will also employ sanctions, as and when necessary.
What does Home Learning look like?
It should be noted that home learning will be set in a variety of different forms with different expectations and outcomes to reflect the nature of the subject studied.
This document outlines the way that subjects set, collect in and feed back to students on Home Learning. In nearly every subject, the assignments will be set on Teams to give students their due date and may direct them to a different platform. Through the Horizons project and our home learning, all our young people have access to a device that allows them to use technology to support online learning. You can support both your child, and our academy home learning policy, by ensuring there is a quiet space to complete tasks and ensuring that the device is charged and ready for use at all times.
If a student has a question or issues logging on to access online learning, please contact the school by email at info@oasisoldham.org or call 0161 624 9630.
