Students took part in round one of the Urban Debate League. Schools from across the country compete to see who will be crowned the national winners of Debate Mate, taking part in a series of debates until the top 10 teams are invited to London to battle it out for the grand prize.
Students at Oasis Academy Oldham competed in the first regional round here in Greater Manchester as we hosted the competition, inviting local schools such as Hathershaw and St John Henry Newman. We entered two teams into the competition; one with some of our experienced debaters who have been taking part in Debate Mate for a few years and the other a novice team with students who are completely new to the format.
Both teams did amazingly well, winning one debate each, but narrowly missing out on the other. They all conducted themselves fantastically, sporting in both defeat and victory and worked well as a team, tackling some really challenging topics such as social media and even imposing a curfew for under 16s! Well done to our novice team in particular who tackled their nerves and fears and confidently stood up in front of an audience for the very first time and presented their ideas.
Round 2 will be commencing in February/March so let's hope for another amazing performance from team OAO!
